West Palm Beach, FL - Uriel Tomas works part time for Jack the Bike Man. He fixes bikes to donate or sell. Jack Hairston inspired Uriel to get an education, and gave him a job. Since 1998, Jack has been a mentor to dozens of kids. Jack said,"I noticed this guy on a bike in front of my house who kept falling off and he was hitting the curb to stop. It was a combination of learning how to ride a bike but noticing that it was faulty, I fixed the brakes on it, and then the next day one of his friends came to my house. People who knew me started dropping off bikes for me to fix to give away."
Jack the Bike Man has been fixing bikes for kids in his predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. He also feeds families in his community. "Every Thursday some of the ladies from St. John Fisher Church cook a hot meal and bring it here and we serve it on a plate with tables and chairs so they can sit down on, and I help them with some of the needs that they need."
Now Jack is gearing up for future projects and needs many volunteers. "One of them is I have to have 650 bicycles for Santa Claus. We have another building in the neighborhood and it has right now about 400 bicycles that need repair. So I need volunteers to come help to repair those bicycles. We could also use some spare change to buy the needed parts."
