How one bike
started it all.

In 1999, Jack Hairston noticed a young man struggling to stop his bicycle outside his home in West Palm Beach. Despite living with physical limitations himself, Jack grabbed a screwdriver and a pair of pliers and repaired the bike's brakes.

Word spread quickly. Neighbors began bringing bicycles to Jack for repairs, while friends donated bikes for him to refurbish and share with children and adults who needed reliable transportation.

As Jack built relationships with local families—many of them migrant workers—he saw firsthand how access to a bicycle could create pathways to work, school, healthcare, and greater opportunity.

What started with one repaired bicycle grew into a community movement rooted in a simple belief: transportation changes lives.

Today, Jack the Bike Man carries that vision forward through bicycle donation, education, and safety programs provided at no cost to children, adults, and seniors throughout Palm Beach County. What began with one bicycle in 1999 became Jack the Bike Man, Inc. in 2007. Following Jack's passing in 2023, the work he began more than 25 years ago continues through every bicycle we restore and every child, adult, and senior we serve.

Giving Every Bicycle a Second Life.

Every bicycle we restore has the potential to change a life while helping protect our environment. Through the work of our staff and volunteers, donated bicycles are carefully inspected, repaired, and made safe for the road before being placed in the hands of a child, adult, or senior who needs reliable transportation. Each bicycle we restore also diverts reusable and recyclable materials from local landfills.

Your financial contributions will help cover the cost of parts, repairs, and refurbishment, making it possible to provide safe, reliable transportation at no cost to children, adults, and seniors throughout Palm Beach County.
